MEET THE ARTIST/ARTIST TALK

With a modernist educational grounding and a gently absurdist attitude I try to predict through my art how we may build for the future. In most favourable light I am driven conceptually by thoughts of regression. When culture, resources and ideas have run dry, might our best move forward, be taken with a view to the past? To this end, I have developed a fictional construct called ‘The Wooden City’. It’s a formalist beacon and sustainable presence that guides my practice; in turn feeding it ideas whilst informing my aesthetic values. From within, my work offers an austere and efficient resolve for our times. One that utilises traditional craft and trade skills rendered in materials that will age with grace to endure the centuries that have inspired them. Redux presents scenes or details from ‘The Wooden City’, brought back for our benefit? Enjoyment? Or education?

How do you find your subject matter?
As always, by studying the details of old buildings as I walk by them on in my neighborhood.

What techniques do you use?
I employ a vast array of techniques in the production of my objects. I lot of them are informed by the tools and materials employed in a certain type of building production. I find intrigue in their traditional values but will strive to find new ways to incorporate them into contemporary thinking. In short however, I like cutting, hammering and nailing things down.

Who are your influences?
Mostly old trades people. I liked their commitment to a task, their pride in workmanship, their tools and the way they presented themselves. From the art world, not much has interested me more than the blue collar minimalists from the 70’s.
