MEET THE ARTIST/ARTIST TALK

How do you find your subject matter?
I have worked the plein air painting more than 15 years. Some mornings we have very dramatic sky and water reflections. Very interesting colours as well. But normally it doesn’t stay for long and changes quickly. So, I love to create these dramatic scene at my studio.

What techniques do you use?
I use oil paints in the studio. I use the wide bush for the 1st stage and use the pallet knife to build up next stage normally. After drying the painting, I use glazing technique on some paintings, if it needs.

Artist Biography
I trained as a potter in Japan over a three year period.  At this time I also had private drawing lessons with a Hungarian sculpture who lived in our village.  These studies helped me to appreciate the subtleties of form so vital to making good pots.

Forty years later I’ve taken those basic skills in drawing and perception and developed a new art practice as a painter.  I attend drawing classes with Peter Lankas and regularly paint ën plein air with my friend and mentor Dino Consalvo at Merewether Beach.

Since January, 2019 I committed myself to producing one artwork a day whether it be a simple sketch, a life drawing or a painting on a canvas.  This repetition has allowed my skills to develop and flourish.  The disruption of the 2021 Lockdown to regular routines has given me more time and my practice has become more focused on painting.

I received the Highly commended award at Hunter Emerging art prize 2024.
I have had my solo exhibition at the Straitjacket in 2024.
