Paul Maher - Artist

Paul Maher is a Newcastle-based artist whose practice centres on suburban landscape painting and drawing. Paul is a compulsive sketcher, who habitually fills A5 art journals with drawings of suburban Newcastle life. Through daily drawing expeditions, Paul captures his changing built environment, the antics of people and their pets in parks within a urban coastal setting. Paul aims to translate the directness of his drawing style and a familiar Australian landscape into his paintings and iPad drawings.

Paul first started exhibiting in Newcastle in the late 1980s after graduating from The University of Newcastle in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) and a Post-Graduate Diploma – Painting in 1985. He first exhibited at galleries including Nick Mitzevich’s 249 Gallery, The Lock Up’s John Paynter Gallery and Von Bortouch Galleries and has continued to maintain a steady exhibition practice. His work is held in the Newcastle Art Gallery as well as private collections in Australia and overseas. He played a leading role in public and community art projects that flourished in Newcastle following the 1989 earthquake. His public art included several large-scale post-earthquake murals across the City and pavemental mosaics which are still in place on Beaumont Street Hamilton and Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery sculpture park.

Paul was represented by Gallery 139 from 2016 – 2020. He first exhibited in Straitjacket during May 2023. He is scheduled to exhibit next in Straitjacket during 2025.
