Lydia Miller - Artist

Lydia Miller was born in the Ukraine during WWII and migrated to Australia with her parents in the early 1950’s. She remembers finding solace in her childhood by drawing on scraps of paper, book covers, even walls with any materials available. However, she wasn’t able to follow her innate desire to create art until she was in her 40’s after she’d graduated with an Arts Degree from the University of New South Wales and worked in Education and Childcare.

She then studied in Sydney at Seaforth School for Art and Design, Julian Ashton Art School, Royal Art Society of NSW and Workshop Arts Centre (WAC) finding her love for painting. Lydia moves effortlessly between the genres of Still Life, Abstraction, Landscape and Portrait painting.

Travel and living outside of Australia has also influenced Lydia’s practice. Lydia and her husband spent 7 years living in Singapore and during this time Lydia travelled extensively throughout Asia and studied traditional Chinese brush painting with well-regarded Chinese Master, Chen Wen Hsi.

Represented in Sydney by NG Art Gallery (Chippendale) until it’s closure in 2012 and
by Gallery 139 from 2018 – 2020.

Lydia first exhibition with Straitjacket was in August 2022, “Still Lifes“. Her second exhibition was “Coastal Improvisations” in 2024, she is next scheduled to exhibit in 2026.
