Kara Wood - Artist

Kara Wood is a Newcastle-based mixed-media, multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the narratives of women, challenging the negative while celebrating the stories that define their strength and resilience. With a foundation in ceramics and fine art from Newcastle Art School, she has spent over 25 years refining a practice that spans ceramics, sculpture, and installation.

Working across both intimate and large-scale formats, Wood’s work is conceptually rich and visually striking, often exploring themes of history, power, and societal structures. Her installations immerse audiences in layered storytelling, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary discourse.

Wood’s work has been shown nationally and internationally, in solo, group and curated invitational exhibitions. Her recent exhibitions include group exhibitions at Singleton Art Gallery, Micheal Reid Northern Beaches, The Lock Up, The Creator Incubator, Straitjacket, Performance Arts Culture – Cessnock, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre and Bundaberg Regional Gallery.

In 2023 The Journal of Australian Ceramics  published “Kara Wood: A Stone Message” written by Madeleine K. Snow Vol. 62 No.3 (November 2023).

Her work is held in private and public collections, including Newcastle Art Gallery.

Her first solo exhibition at Straitjacket was ENOUGH in 2022. Her second solo exhibition, Still Lies, took place in 2024.
