Liam Power - Exhibition
30 July - 14 August 2022
Liam Power exhibits a new body of work in Gallery 2 & Project Space, “RAWroar”.
“I work as a butcher and therefore i’m interested in the relationship between knife and paint brush. An interdisciplinary exchange between skills that i’ve learnt overtime. It is the dexterity of using hand held tools every day and the physical act of breaking down a carcass for visual display that has informed my current artist practice. I’ve been thinking about meat as a perishable product, juxtaposed with the notion of permanence that is associated with traditional oil painting.
This body of work explores the subtle nuances of painting enmeshed with the explicit aesthetics of the meat industry. The subject of meat is contentious, especially when we think about consumption and how landscape is used for livestock. There’s an overuse of materials, an imbalance and an over production. These paintings act as placards, warning signs hidden under a veil of pastel tones and painterly surfaces. It is the shapes of boning hooks, knives, meat cleavers, muscle cars and floral arrangements that forebode a kind of momento mori. Tools, skills and objects that will wear down and perhaps fail to have any purpose. “
