MEET THE ARTIST Saturday 29 June 11am – 2pm including artist talk at 1pm. Free event.

Treechanger is Hugh Ramage’s 26th solo exhibition and his first at Straitjacket. The work explores personal themes of dislocation, movement and adaptation following an exit from the urban Sydney suburb of Redfern where he resided for over 30 years, to a coastal bush property at Umina Beach.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

With a practice spanning over forty years, Hugh Ramage is a multidisciplinary artist whose work primarily uses the figure to explore divergent themes through painting, sculpture, print-making, mixed media, curation and installation. Each of his cycles of work attempts to examine humans in their complex capacity for beauty, fortitude and malevolence. Themes are explored through introspection and the investigation of contemporary, political and historical events.

As well as remaining committed to his studio practice, Hugh sees as an extension of his work a continuous social engagement through collaboration. To this end, he has established a number of non-profit, artist-run spaces since the early 1980s, which have provided countless opportunities for artists to produce and exhibit their work without constraint – the most notable being Duckrabbit (2015 – 2023) — a studio and exhibition space in Redfern which showed the work of over 250 artists – both emerging and established.

Hugh has been the recipient of a number of awards, including the Gallipoli Art Prize (2014 runner-up), the Director’s Prize – Sculpture By The Sea (2007) and Hazelhurst Art Prize People’s Choice Award (2005). His work is held in both private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (Powerhouse), Artbank, the Dobell Foundation, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the University of Sydney and University of Technology Union Collections, Transfield Collection and Aarhus Arts Council, Denmark.
