“I want painting to attain the condition of music.

These works are based on drawings made underneath trees. The intense focus of drawing tree forms became a meditation on their growth, the relationship of form to time and space and the vast significance of them to life. Their development as abstract paintings in the studio opens up the forms for an interplay of linear marks, layers of colours and shifts of light and transparency.” Matthew Tome
