Here, but not here, is a visual transcript of places and moments taken from travels with the artist’s family in 2022 and collaged together to create an ambiguous postcard.

“I believe the history of a place changes your perception of it. Memories imbedded here, both personal and learned from past story tellers, serve as mnemonic references connecting to time and place.

As an artist I am interested in the application of paint and expressive mark making for its ability to capture the feeling of the landscape rather than creating an exact representation of it. The idiosyncrasies within each application of medium are the whispers of truth that go beyond the story. The marks that don’t lie.

From my studies I have learned that as my perception of a place changes so too does my mark making. Gestural, hesitant scratches may have moved into bold, confident lashings of brushwork. From my travels I have learned that my areas of interest in the landscape change as well. While initially the most obvious points are what capture my attention, the trees, the hills and so on, as I immerse myself in each place, I become more interested in the negative space, the shadow and colour variations and each artwork reflects this.” Katrina Holden
