“For many years my sculpture practice has focused on the darker side of humanity, however moving forward  this new body of work seeks to evoke a more uplifting feeling for both myself and the viewer.

I am drawn to the aesthetics of the 1920s for its sense of glamour, elegance and symmetry. This era was a time of great social change, artistic innovation and economic prosperity, it was also marked by challenges and seeds of future turmoil. The correlations between the 1920s and our present time, led me to reflect on the enduring human experience.

With the integration of the found object from a bygone time into the forms, I hoped to provoke a connection with the past within the contemporary space of the gallery. The intention for me was to create a sense of hope and reflect on the resilience of humanity.” Marlene Houston
