James Rhodes - Short Stay

29 April - 21 May 2023

OPENING/MEET THE ARTIST Saturday 29 April, 11am – 5pm ALL WELCOME

James Rhodes uses his arts practice to examine life from a variety of angles. Utilising a multifaceted approach Rhodes explores the experience of life and the memory of existence through his embodied making processes, this produces works that are intentionally ambiguous so that the audience may project their own experience of life upon them. Rhodes directly affects his works by embedding his awareness of time and memory into his materials, leaving behind subtle symbols for the viewer to unpack.

‘Short Stay’ depicts motel interiors as a motif for a deeper examination of mortality. On the surface the body of work explores the often-forgotten locations one stays at when traveling. Once one scratches beneath the surface the work examines the transient nature of life itself. We are all here for a short stay, and all that we once needed will all vanish like the floral bedspread of a cheap motel.
