Peter Lankas - Exhibition
1 - 16 October 2022
In Gallery 1, Peter Lankas will be exhibiting a selection of ipad drawings printed on paper that delve into the Australian suburban landscape in “Loungeroom escape”.
“For me drawing has been an escape into a private space of exploration, retreat into reflection, experimentation, and discovery or just playful automatic wonderings. Its immediacy, honesty, intimacy, as well as playfulness, means nothing can really go wrong. Drawing is drawing; scribbles and marks made, moment by moment into something often unplanned, an intuitive response and surprise reacting to a moment in time. Action, reaction. The best drawing is a journey into the unknown.
It is often said, a drawing is finished when you stop drawing. Leonardo reportedly stated, ‘Art is never finished, only abandoned’. Sometimes one must conclude. Some drawings have grown over time, others brief; created by a late night loungeroom traveller, on the sofa in total domesticity, iPad on lap, made as studies for paintings, some realised, others in hibernation.
For well over a decade now, the iPad has been a sketchbook for a large part of my visual process as well as a teaching tool.
I use the iPad the same way as I draw on paper, using a simple programme without technical aids, filters, or layers, only a selection of format, hue, transparency, tool size and kind.
I see these not as paintings or complex digital works, only as private drawings for the use in my studio process. Originally, I never intended them to be exhibited, they are a selection from hundreds of digital drawings.
There is no definitive concept as they cover a fair timespan from different periods. A narrative of the everyday and ever-changing process. My interest is in storytelling and ways of visually and formally catching that.”
